I never got into Malcolm in the Middle, I think it's kind of a dumb show. But last night, and again this morning, I was present while a rerun of "Day Care" (season 4, episode 22) was on.
In the episode, Malcolm's family pretend to be Christians so that they can have free day care for their newborn at a church with said free day care. Hilarity ensues as the middle kids attend Sunday school, where one of them "finds Jesus" (although I'm pretty sure they don't say it quite that way).
The boy decides that his newfound religion means he's supposed to fly; he attaches several helium-filled balloons to a lawn chair and takes off "above the clouds", bidding his little brother a fond farewell. He ends up crashing through the church's stained glass window just as his parents are coming clean to the pastor.
Who cares.
But while the kid is floating along in his lawn chair, he sings his version of "Amazing Grace":
Amazing Grace, how sweet the taste
That saved a wrench for me!
I once was in the Lost and Found,
But then I found the key.
Or something pretty close to that.
And, funnily enough, aside from the wrench (which I can't explain, other than it sounds like "wretch"), I think it's pretty good theology.
