This was when I should have said something to the effect of "Oh, I don't like to show off my drawings, I'm a little self-conscious about them" because I knew what their reaction was going to be.
Most of my stuff is either just faces, or studies of facial features, or "fan art"--usually my version of a literary character or whatever. So okay, I'm a nerd again, and I know I am, but I really am a little self conscious when it's in such a tangible form as my second-rate artwork.
But I showed them. Then I got to my favorite piece--it's an illustration of the scene in Voyage of the Dawn Treader (one of the books in The Chronicles of Narnia) where Edmund and Scrubb are walking along the shore after Scrubb's dragon episode.

They started laughing and saying stupid crap like "Some guys walking down the beach holding hands! You draw fags, Booth?" And other such drivel.
It made me angry and upset and all these other emotions that I don't like, which is why I never should have opened the book to them. I knew what would happen, that they would have zero appreciation for any of it. And even though that's really more of a statement about who they are than me or my work, I still reacted badly. Only on the inside, but still. It made me mad.
Seriously, I wouldn't talk smack about their kids. Why do they have to make fun of mine?

Those are great drawings!!! I especially like the conductor.
I can relate to ignorant comments. They're everywhere. Actually if I don't hear any I wonder if I'm still on Earth.
